Efficient, Safe, and Low-Carbon Wood Kiln

Dry firewood burns more efficiently and releases 29% more energy

The Lansdowne Wood Kiln system requires no user adjustment, it simply works. While remotely monitoring wood moisture content to ensure consistently kiln dry firewood and timber.

Wood burnt at 20% Moisture Content Net CV = 4.1 MWh/t*

Wood Burnt at 0% Moisture Content Net CV = 5.3 MWh/t*

Dry firewood is essential for lignin combustion, making timber drying both safer and significantly more effective.**

With the RHI now closed to new applications and fire risk an ongoing concern, the Lansdowne Wood Kiln offers a reliable, low-carbon solution with near-zero running costs.

Core Benefits

  • RHI closed to new applications
  • Minimised fire risk
  • Near zero running costs with minimal carbon emissions
  • No user adjustment needed. It just works.
  • Remote monitoring of
wood moisture content
  • Dry firewood burns better and releases 29% more energy*
  • Lignin combustion is only possible with dry firewood**
  • Timber drying

RHI closed to new applications

The Non Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (NDRHI) scheme closed to new applications for accreditation on 31 March 2021. If you are interested in setting up a new firewood or timber kiln drying facility the numbers speak for themselves. It is simply unaffordable without this.

Fire Risk

The Lansdowne Wood Kiln is designed to eliminate the severe fire risks associated with conventional high-temperature combustion systems. There are no high temperatures present and no part of the system uses combustion to generate heat.
Powered Wood Drying Kilns have caught fire and are an ongoing risk because most rely on burning a fuel to provide the heat energy needed. If you already have an ongoing RHI funded operation the risk of a fire in your kiln may mean that you have a problem getting insurance.

Near Zero running costs

Once installed the system is either a Solar Powered Wood Kiln, or Waste Heat Powered Wood Kiln. This configuration utilizes free natural or byproduct energy.

The system has very few moving parts making it very low maintenance compared to traditional systems. Contrast that with a RHI funded biomass combustion powered kiln. The heater itself will need servicing on a yearly basis and replacement after 10 or so years. The operator will need to supply biomass that is prepared by chipping or shredding, and delivered to the biomass wood kiln boiler by an automated conveyor system. None of these equipment, maintenance and operation costs are present with the Lansdowne Wood Kiln.

Biomass needs to be prepared, by shredding or chipping, and then loaded or conveyed into the combustion system. Typically more than one 1m3 of biomass is needed per day and is an ongoing task even if automated. Additional yard space will be occupied by this dedicated biomass operation and this eats into the valuable storage space.

The Lansdowne Wood Kiln is designed for near-zero operational carbon emissions. The Solar Wood Kiln and the Waste Heat Wood kiln are powered from zero carbon energy.

The carbon emissions for the electrical option can be minimal if taken using an off peak tariff.

No user adjustment needed.
It just works!

There are no user adjustments required for drying firewood. Simply load the chamber and wait until the EMC prediction is right. Open the door to check, and then unload the kiln.

If you are not able to get to the job immediately, the wood will just keep getting drier. There is no need to program a particular cycle as with a powered kiln. No need to make decisions about when to operate it.

Much like an Aga in the kitchen, this is always ready to go, and just does the job without you needing to think about it.

Remote monitoring of
wood moisture content

The Kiln comes with its own Equilibrium Moisture Content monitoring system. This measures the temperature and humidity in the chamber next to the load and gives a daily prediction of the average moisture content in the load.

There is no need to open the chamber whilst it is running!
